Carat our family dog and namesake or “from shelter dog to photo model”
It all started when I misread something:
After the death of our German Shepherd Stella in August 2016, I was browsing theGerman Shepherd Emergency Aid eV website and discovered Carat. I simply misread the date that Carat came to the animal shelter and thought, my God, the poor thing has been in the animal shelter for 4 years. I have to take a look at him. The next day, my husband and I drove to the Heppenheim Animal Welfare Association eV . Carat had been there for 2 years and that is a very long time.
There he stood in his huge outdoor kennel with a lawn and looked at us curiously: a nice old German Shepherd with one blind eye. After talking to animal keeper Robin, we went for a walk in the fields with Carat. Then animal keeper Katrin told us about all of Carat's illnesses. I have to be honest, that gave us something to digest. In addition to his blind eye, Carat also has pancreatic insufficiency and anal fissures due to an eye disease. In the weeks that followed, we often went for walks and got to know each other. After a while, the illnesses lost their terror and Carat moved in with us - forever.
Carat settled in quickly and gave us more and more of his trust every day. He couldn't have given us a better compliment. He is a treasure with the typical German Shepherd "will to please" and praise is everything to him.
Rex Specs came into our lives with Carat. Due to his eye disease, Carat has to wear dog goggles to protect him from UV rays ( see also "Effects of UV radiation on the dog's eye" by veterinarian Vera Neun ). The Rex Specs also protect Carat from being stung in the bushes.
